Supporting interdisciplinary research for dementia

Dementia is an increasingly pressing, global public health challenge.

  • Dementia affects an estimated 90,000 people and 65% of the care home population in Scotland.
  • Projections show a 50% increase of the number of people aged over 65 who will be affected in the next two decades.
  • Some estimates suggest 1 in 3 people born today will go on to develop dementia.

To respond to the scale of this challenge, researchers from different disciplines need to work together.

Interdisciplinary research combines perspectives, methods, skills, and expertise, helping to make substantial breakthroughs in the search for causes, treatments, and better quality of care.

Dementia.ED works to enable these vital interdisciplinary collaborations across the University of Edinburgh. Our aim is to nurture a diverse research community and support the development of innovative research.

How donations help us

Donations provide invaluable support for the network’s activity, as they allow us to continue the pursuit of innovative research for dementia.

Our work includes:

  • Enabling collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers by organising events like workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Helping researchers engage people with lived experience of dementia as partners in research.
  • Pursuing funding for interdisciplinary projects.
  • Supporting early career researchers.
